![]() For best canoeing, the water level should be between one and three feet on the bridge gauges and between three and five feet on the USGS gauge. To determine the water levels, check the gauges on the road bridges or the Durham station USGS river gauge. Rain can also create class I, II, and III rapids. However, after a heavy rainfall, canoeing is easier. Canoeing can be difficult because the water is often so shallow. Many people take to the water by canoeing or kayaking. Of course, all regulations of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission must be observed. Chubs and bullheads are also caught at times. The most common fish caught are largemouth bass, bluegill, and Roanoke bass. There are also many places to fish off the banks. The river is fairly shallow, so wading is not a problem. There are almost 30 miles of trails available for hiking in Eno River State Park. Let’s look at what the park has to offer. Over the years, more land was acquired by the association to protect and preserve more of the river and the land around it. The park was established in 1975 when the state acquired more than 1,000 acres of land, with the help of the Eno River Association and the Nature Conservancy. The park consists of 4,900 acres of land, much of it along the Eno River, providing places for hiking, camping, fishing, paddling, and picnicking. The park is the perfect place to unwind and get in touch with nature. The Eno River State Park is just in northwest of Durham just a short drive from downtown. If you are looking to commune with nature in the Triangle area, you don’t have to look far. Erosion of the lineaments and other fault zones may have formed landscape conditions suitable for a ford and mill site by early settlers.Craving a little nature? Visit the Eno River State Park to get your nature fix! Two of these lineaments intersect immediately upstream of the Fews Ford area and are responsible for the high-angle bend in the Eno River. Original depositional layering is steeping dipping due to folding attributed to the Virgilina deformation.ĭetailed topographic data indicates the presence of abundant lineaments that suggest widespread brittle faulting overprint (Mesozoic age?) of Carolina terrane rocks. Deposition is interpreted to have been relatively proximal to a volcanic vent of dacitic composition within a paleovalley that was infilled with lahar flows, lavas, and lithic tuff. Outcrops on the east side of the falls consist of lithic meta-tuffs with clasts of black-colored plagioclase porphyritic dacite and dacitic lavas with hyaloclastic textures. At times of low water, a metamorphosed mafic dike ranging from 3 to 4 feet wide crosscuts the meta-conglomerate and can be traced for several feet. Some clasts display appreciable rounding suggesting possible reworking in a stream. ![]() Clasts types include flow-banded lavas, tuffs, porphyritic intrusive rocks and fine- to medium-grained intrusive rocks. Clasts are angular to subrounded and range in size from a few millimeters up to 1 meter. The rocks are green to dark green, matrix supported, polymictic, poorly sorted, immature meta-conglomerates. Outcrops exposed on the west side of the falls have been interpreted as lahars by past workers. 615 – 630 Ma) volcanic rocks assigned to the Hyco Formation of the Virgilina sequence of the Carolina terrane. The falls at Few's Ford access area in Eno River State Park, near Durham, NC, expose outcrops of Late Proterozoic-aged (ca. ![]()
